ABOUT OUR INSTITUTION
Establishment and Early Years

Founded in 1959, the Government Polytechnic, Proddatur began as a government-run technical education institute with the aim of providing diploma-level engineering education in the region.

The polytechnic was established under the Department of Technical Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh and is affiliated to the State Board of Technical Education and Training (SBTET), Andhra Pradesh. It is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Initial Academic Programs (1959)

At its inception, the institute offered three core engineering diploma branches:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

Each of these branches initially had an intake of about 40 students.

Expansion of Courses
Year Details
1985 A fourth branch was introduced — Electronics & Communication Engineering — with an increased intake capacity of around 50 students.
2006 A fifth branch, Diploma in Computer Engineering, was added to meet the growing demand for computer science and IT skills among students.
Further Growth

In 2008–2009, Government Polytechnic Proddatur was among ten polytechnic institutes selected for introducing additional second sections in some programs — such as Mechanical, ECE, EEE and Sandwich branches — to further enhance training opportunities.

Modern Era

Over the decades, the institute has expanded its intake capacity and upgraded its facilities, now offering multiple diploma programs in core and modern engineering disciplines.

The campus includes facilities such as hostel accommodation, libraries, laboratories, sports infrastructure, and a placement cell to support students’ career growth.

Admission to these programs is typically through the AP POLYCET entrance examination, which is the common polytechnic entrance test in Andhra Pradesh.

Affiliation and Recognition

The polytechnic continues to operate under the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Andhra Pradesh, offering recognized diploma qualifications that prepare students for technical careers or further education.
